Best Picture, Drama

"Babel,” ”Bobby,” ”The Departed,” ”Little Children,” ”The Queen”
______________________
Our thoughts:
  • We have no idea how Bobby got nominated for anything. Lindsay Lohan said that she wanted to win an Oscar before she was 30. She probably thought that her turn in Bobby was her big chance.
  • The Departed will win, but it is not a sure thing.

Best Actress, Drama

Penelope Cruz, "Volver”; Judi Dench, ”Notes on a Scandal”; Maggie Gyllenhaal, "Sherrybaby”; Helen Mirren, ”The Queen”; Kate Winslet, ”Little Children.”
_______________________
Our thoughts:
  • The Globes really love the Brits.
  • We want Helen Mirren to win.
  • We loved Penelope Cruz in Volver, but she probably won't win.

Best Actor, Drama

Leonardo DiCaprio, ”Blood Diamond”; Leonardo DiCaprio, ”The Departed”; Peter O’Toole, ”Venus”; Will Smith, ”The Pursuit of Happyness”; Forest Whitaker, ”The Last King of Scotland”
___________________
Our thoughts:
  • We think that Leonardo DiCaprio will win for The Departed.

Best Picture, Musical or Drama

Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan,” ”The Devil Wears Prada,” ”Dreamgirls,” ”Little Miss Sunshine,” ”Thank You for Smoking.”
__________________
Our thoughts:
  • For the first time ever this category is really tough.
  • Borat, Little Miss Sunshine or Dreamgirls could win.

Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy

Annette Bening, ”Running With Scissors”; Toni Collette, ”Little Miss Sunshine”; Beyonce Knowles, ”Dreamgirls”; Meryl Streep, ”The Devil Wears Prada”; Renee Zellweger, ”Miss Potter.”
_________________________
Our thoughts:
  • We are only mildly impressed with this category.
  • Beyonce's singing in Dreamgirls was awesome, but this category is for acting- so she should not win.
  • Meryl Streep's performance in Devil Wears Prada was really overrated.
  • Annette Bening and Toni Collete were good, but nothing special.

Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy

Sacha Baron Cohen, ”Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan”; Johnny Depp, ”Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest”; Aaron Eckhart, "Thank You for Smoking”; Chiwetel Ejiofor, ”Kinky Boots”; Will Ferrell, ”Stranger than Fiction”
_______________________
Our thoughts:
  • Borat will probably win. The other people don't even need to show up.
  • We wonder if Sacha Cohen will give his speech as Borat. That would be very annoying if he decided to do that.
  • Johnny Depp will do his best to look unattractive- which isn't easy, but somehow he accomplishes it.

Best Supporting Actress

Adriana Barraza, ”Babel”; Cate Blanchett, ”Notes on a Scandal”; Emily Blunt, ”The Devil Wears Prada”; Jennifer Hudson, ”Dreamgirls”; Rinko Kikuchi, ”Babel”
_______________________________________________
Our thoughts:
  • Jennifer Hudson will win because she's awesome in the movie and Beyonce is going to be incredibly jealous. Everyone else in this category must want to cry.
  • Cate Blanchett seems to be nominated every year. We can't even keep track of what movie she is being nominated for.
  • We can't believe that Abigail Breslin from Little Miss Sunshine was not nominated.
  • Adriana Barraza and Rinko Kikuchi are hard to recognize in the picture above at the Palm Springs Film Festival.

Best Supporting Actor

Ben Affleck, ”Hollywoodland”; Eddie Murphy, ”Dreamgirls”; Jack Nicholson, ”The Departed”; Brad Pitt, ”Babel”; Mark Wahlberg, ”The Departed.”
_____________________________________________
This is a big category since it includes both Dramas and Comedies.
Our thoughts:
  • We think that Eddie Murphy is going to win because he was really good in "Dreamgirls." His ego will be out of control. He's also a little scuzzy with the way he left a pregnant Scary Spice.
  • We love Jack Nicholson but we are tired of him constantly being nominated.
  • We don't understand why Matt Damon has not been nominated, but Ben Affleck and Mark Wahlberg were.
  • Brad Pitt's people probably thought that he was a sure win, but he'll have to find another role that downplays his looks. Whatever.

Best Director

Clint Eastwood, ”Flags of Our Fathers”; Clint Eastwood, ”Letters from Iwo Jima”; Steven Frears, ”The Queen”; Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu, ”Babel”; Martin Scorsese, ”The Departed.”

People really like Clint Eastwood.

Best Screenplay

Guillermo Arriaga, ”Babel”; Todd Field and Tom Perrotta, ”Little Children”; Patrick Marber, ”Notes on a Scandal”; William Monahan, ”The Departed”; Peter Morgan, "The Queen".
